October Artist of the Month - Bruce Rabeler Photographer

Bruce Rabeler was born on a dairy farm in the Catskill Mountains of upstate New York. That’s where his deep love of nature began. His paternal grandmother and maternal grandfather were avid gardeners and he credits his interest in horticulture to them. An early role model, his paternal grandfather also introduced him to photography, the joys of travel, and beauty of back roads. But it wasn’t until years later, after graduating from Cornell University with a degree in Philosophy, moving to Boulder, Colorado and starting a career at a wholesale nursery, that he put all those interests together.

The catalyst was a winter trip to the Caribbean. To document the trip, he purchased a digital camera, and proceeded to literally take a couple thousand photographs. Coming home, he was hooked and didn’t want to stop. Not having the means to perpetually travel, he needed new subject matter. Being an avid gardener himself, there were endless subjects right out his back door. That’s when he discovered macro botanical photography.

Macro opened up a whole new world and allowed him to travel without leaving home. But, what captivated him, was that close-up, macro photography was pure composition. No longer were you taking pictures “of something”. You were composing: pure and simple. It became all about color, light and texture.

Moreover, like philosophy, the quest is to find that unique perspective. To explore all angles until the perfect composition presents itself. That’s when the magic happens and that’s what he lives for: to share the infinite beauty that is all around us.
